Photographer's Note

A little further down the river, our captain caught sight of this fellow who had caught a sturgeon. He cut the engine and approached the scene. We actually saw him reel it in, but by the time I could turn the camera on and position myself, this was the view.

Sturgeon is a protected species in the Snake River. Man-made changes to the Snake River (such as dams) mean most sections of the river no longer have the habitat to support successful sturgeon spawning. An ongoing conservation aquaculture program tries to boost sturgeon populations in the Snake River using eggs collected from wild-spawning fish in the river. Collecting eggs directly from fish naturally spawning in the Snake River preserves all the genetic diversity of wild populations and eliminates the need to collect adults from the wild and spawn them in captivity. Once collected, the tiny eggs are taken to College of Southern Idaho and Niagara Springs hatcheries, where the eggs are carefully incubated and raised. After about a year in the hatchery, the juvenile sturgeon reach about 12 inches before being returned to the river. Biologists from Idaho Power and Fish and Game stock them back into the Snake River.

So, according to Idaho fishing regulations, sturgeon must not be removed from the water and must
be released upon landing. Sturgeon can be rolled onto their backs in the water before removing the hook. This generally calms the fish down making it easier to remove the hook.

We are looking at the aftermath of removing the hook from the sturgeon.
