Photographer's Note
Specialist Velasco is made to push-ups as punishment for losing his soft cap (hat). Upon discovering that he misplaced his hat, his Sergeant ordered him to wear his kevlar (the battle helmet next to him) in place of his normal hat.
Part of my Army Life photo story.

I have been just sitting next to Charly Cole, who is a close body of J. Nachtwey and a well knows Newsweek and TIME photographer too (he did the famous Tianman Square shots in Beijing with the student and the tanks), and we have been chatting about photography.
His comments to your b/w pics on the army story were simple " A picture a story!" I agree with him, you got it right and you can make it. Just need a bit of luck I guess. From the photojournalismn pov, perfecto!

Great storytelling, Mark. The tilt adds dynamism, and showing only the feet of his (presumably) superior officer suggests the view that the Specialist has. Ideally the helmet would be visually separated from the head, but for a journalistic image that's pretty insignificant. You have great stuff, I hope you do make a career of it! Happy New Year, regards, Ken.

Your composition is great as usual. I especially like the addition of the second soldier's legs. I have to admit that b&w doesn't really seem to work on this series for me. I MUCH prefer the color ones. Maybe you were going for the photojournalist look with b&w but something was lost in the translation. I still love the series though. JP
