Photographer's Note
Please open in a new tab.
I'm back from a week happily free of wifi in the New South Wales high country (The Snowy Mountains) - photos from there in a few days.
Now a second photo showing the old capital of Fiji in 1875 and 1997.
The bottom photo, taken by my great grand father in about 1875, shows the family photographic studio with my great, great grandfather's name on the front.
The top photo was taken by me in 1997 and shows where the shop had been. The building on the right is the building on the right of the bottom photo but a bit "modernised".
You'll notice the shadowy figure of a Fijian in the old photo - that is because the glass plates of that time required long exposures.

Hello Ian, I am glad that you are back from the trip. And sometimes, it is a good thing to be away from Wifi for some days (it can be hard, though :)). amazing view of the same place after 120 years. what gems you have. And how interesting that the photographic tradition is so long in your family!
Best regards Malgo

Hi Ian
The 1997 shot would have to be the one at the top. Better quality, less noise, and the people aren't ghosted like the lower shot. Tfs!

Hello Ian,
This time it's not so easy to recognize it's the same place. So much has changed, even the hill looks different. But it's still fascinating to see a photo from the 18th century on TE. And disregarding the shadowy figures and the noise, the sharpness of such an old camera is still impressive.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi Ian,a new very interesting jumo in the past and in the history of your family,it'a nice to see the studio of your grandfather and to see how this place has changed after 122 years, nice idea to do a black and white version for the most recent pic to have a great comparision. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hello Ian,
I can only imagine what pleasure you must have had, looking at the fine photographs that your great grandfather had taken and comparing them with scenes taken by yourself, of the same locations. Photographic records are so much more fun to study that family trees!
The original is amazingly sharp considering the difficulties of using a glass slide. Your photographs are less grainy.
I was truck by how colonial the buildings look in the original.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Ian,
Comparing the two photos, I can see the difference in the type pf buildings. The point of view is showing the details of the buildings and of the mountains. The black and white is giving a good contrast to the scene. Have a nice day.

Hi Ian,
so there is a blood of a photographic artist in you! That makes sense!
Great series of photos, of course it would be better having them from the same POV but it is close enough I suppose.
I am actually glad that technology as developed so well. Having already purchased the camera it becomes relatively cheap to take any number of photos and test variety of conditions. I remember when I waited for the prints not knowing how the photos worked at all.
Very nice trip in time and space as well.

Hello Ian,
Another great set of photos showing the same place at two entirely different moments in time. The small white houses stand out well from the darker background in both photos.

Hello Ian,
This is probably the oldest photo on TE. Great combination of these two pictures, an interesting note.
I am waiting for presentations from the Snowy Mountains.
Good work, fine presentation
