Photographer's Note
This little girl is struggling to carry a load of pandanus fruit that she and her older brother have collected in the jungle near their home. I spotted them walking along the side of a dirt road on Buota islet, Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, Kiribati. Anyone who has collected pandanus fruit will know how heavy they are. Her brother was walking a few metres in front of her empty-handed, so I suppose that indicates that in the Gilbertese culture it is women that who do all the hard work – even at an early age.
I had a choice of using this close-up or a wide shot of the little girl trailing the brother. The latter would have told the story about the women doing all the work, but I chose this close-up as her frowned expression says as much as the wide shot. PP: cropped, contrast +8, saturation +13, unsharp mask.

I like this kind of portraits - people during their daily life... like this little girl with breadfruit. Also I like this white flash in her eyes.

I like this portrait a lot, your note is useful, but the expression of the little girl could have been enough.

Hi David - fantastic portrait, the effort she's making is evident, and very colourful. I have never seen this fruit, what is called breadfruit in the carribbean looks very different, it is round and green like a melon shape and spiky skin.

Great portrait of the beatiful young lady. You cought a very nice moment when she's carrying the fruits.
Thank you for all the information you posted in your notes - your pictures are the only source of images from Kiribati here in TE.

beautiful shot david ... but shots like this make me sad, because i think of the carefree lives of pampered kids here in korea. i compare that to kids i've seen in cambodia, laos, thailand and other countries. these kids have to work all day to make money for their families.
like the 4 year old boy outside angkor wat who only knew two english words: "two dollars".
beautiful portrait of a sweet, young face and the sadness in those eyes.

This is one of the most beautiful photos which I saw in TrekEarth. At the photo everything is correct: the grace of the beautiful girl, the picture composition, the colors etc. Outstanding. Greeting, Wolfgang

"Good" tormented expression in the girl's face. Lovely colors overall. I wonder how this would have looked in a portrait format?

David,
I thought I was fairly good at geography until today. It seems though, that you have been to a country that I did not even know existed...I learn something about the world everytime I visit this site.
Great portrait. The title is a great interpretation of the girls expression. Nicely composed with a good background and good color.
Great work.
John
