Not quite black and white, a photo from Tarawa, Gilbert Islands

Photographer's Note

The first and third photographs that I posted of Kiribati (‘Crowded beach’ and ‘Low tide on the atoll’) earlier this week showed how calm the sea is on the lagoon side of a coral atoll, but on the seaward side the ocean can be quite rough, as can be seen in this shot. However, I took this photograph for a different reason – and that was because of the almost monochromatic look to this sunset scene. Apart from sharpening, this is exactly as shot (no desaturation at all) – a big contrast to the usual deep blues and aquamarine tones that you see in my other photographs of Kiribati, and a departure from the usual deep orange sunsets that you associate with the tropics.

A delicious sunset with subtle colours. Very nice how you have found some light behind the palm tree, so that it is brought more into sharp focus. Excellent colour ranges.

Hi David - superb tropical sunset, it has all of the elements of a dreamy calender shot: silhouetted coconut, frothy ocean, puffy storm clouds and sky reflected on wet sand.
