Photographer's Note

The west coast and Waitakere mountain ranges are only a short drive from Auckland, but the area is wild and remote: an ancient landscape full of poetry and elemental grandeur.

It's a spiritual place - Maori believe that spirits travel up this coast on their way to the northern tip of New Zealand at Cape Reinga, where the spirits of the dead are thought to leave this world for their homeland. Hawaiki.

The weather here can be fierce and it is known as the 'untamed coast' - even though it has been inhabited for 1000 years the dense rainforests and rock makes the land difficult to cultivate.

A great place to come to escape the city and feel the wind and rain on your face!

O'Neill's bay is north of Bethell's beach and is a popular spot for surfers (and film-makers: The Piano was filmed near here, and also Xena: warrior princess)
