Dear Simon, I think that what it does not work here is that there are too many things to look at, and the eyes don't know where to go. I think that the main rule for a good photo is that there must be a subject that captures the attention. Here the two bikes are "hidden" by other "dirty" objects, like the tree in foreground, the red band in the buyuilding, the pole, the shadows, the out of focus leaves, etc. Too many things. I hope you don't mind my criticism
