Photographer's Note
There are two marble urn on the main floor of Hagia Sophia. According to Hagia Sophia Research Team (HSRT), "Each of them carved from single blocks of marble, alabaster urns date from Hellenistic times. Found by a peasant as he was ploughing his field in Pergamon, the marble jars were full of gold. The peasant came to Sultan Murat III to tell him he found three marble jars in his field. Sultan brought two of them to Hagia Sophia and granted him the third jar and the field in which he found them. He is also said to have required the soldiers to empty the jars because Sultan wanted only the jars not the gold. After adding a tap and a lid on them, the urns were used to take ritual ablutions in the Hagia Sophia."
The workshop photos reveal details from the ceiling of the upper gallery.

Hello Murat,
Good photo of this large urn with its appealing warm colours. The people are well included and show the size of the urn clearly. The girl's red skirt adds a nice colour contrast.

Hello Murat,
Funny that what one person admires so much somebody else turns its back to.
Some even get lucky by enjoying a marble bench.
What a colossal marble work of art!
Best regards, Paul

Hello Murat,
I looked at all your photos of the interior of Hagia Sophia. It looks so different now. On one hand, I do not see any scaffoldings. It seems somehow more spacious. Of course, now the floor is covered with carpet. But I am horrified seeing that the mosaics are obscured. Is it not possible that they will be just taken away?
Very interesting story about these big jars. I do not remember them. Very nice picture with the girl in a red skirt. But who belongs to this hand??
I see that I haven't posted any pictures of the Hagia Sophia Interior. Maybe because of these scaffoldings.
Best regards MAlgo

Hi Murat,
The large marble alabaster urn has a unique style. I have been to Bergama and Pergamon but found no pots of gold there! Some stunning ancient Greek ruins though, although the Germans removed most of the friezes which are now in Berlin museum. Tfs!

Hi Murat,
Interesting story about the origins of the urns. When I was in Egypt we were taken to an alabaster factory and I actually bought much smaller urn there which moved with me from one place to another but sadly recently it crashed. That was in times when the weight of the baggage was much less restricted.
Charming capture here with the child staring with interest while old man resting. All generations come there to enjoy the place.
Very well done,
M
