Photographer's Note

This sunset shot was taken over the rice fields south-west of Siem Reap on a back-road not far from the village of Chong Khneas. I'd spotted this clump of cabbage palms earlier in the day, on my way back from a morning photo shoot on the Tonle Sap Lake, and guessed that the sun would set behind them. I thought if I was right about the positioning, they would make a very dramatic silhouette against the setting sun. I came back about 20 minutes before sunset and started shooting different exposures, and this turned out to be the best one. I used a tripod but could have achieved this shot without one because shooting directly into the sun meant the shutter speed needed to be quite high. I used Photoshop to fix a lens flare towards the top of the frame and adjusted the colour balance slightly to enhance the reds, but other than that it is pretty close to the original. Focal length: 170mm. ISO200.
