Photographer's Note
Happy New Year everyone, and I've just got back again. This time from driving trains in Poland (see more in the travelogue). This is the regular Wolsztyn to Leszno morning commuter service, and yesterday morning was the only chance I got to take a shot of it, since the for the rest of the week I've been driving it!
So here's the first of a series of Polish trains (hope it doesn't get boring). I thought of making this B&W, but I like the reflected lights on the parked coaches, and there's other opportunities.

Hello Richard,
J’adore le rendu des couleurs ici !
La zone de fumée est proche du noir et blanc, tandis que les phares du train déchirent la rétine !!!
C’est superbe
J’adore
Merci pour le partage

Hello Richard,
Reminds me the days of WWII in Poland and that is not a good memory. Nevertheless I find the picture extremely strong with the locomotive, the thick cloud of smoke and the reflections of the light on the wagon.
Excellent shot Richard - Izzet

Beautiful shot, Richard.. great smoke! I like the little slice of background shrouded in pollution, and I'm glad you chose to keep the color for the sake of the headlight reflections which are the finishing touch. It looks like it'd be fun to drive!

Hi Richard,
This one is a great shot and reminds me the old time before the steam was replaced by diesel fuel.
A lot of pollution too so I placed this one under the theme pollution. The red reflects on the wagons reminds us the brazier inside the locomotive thus generating power and pollution.
I am in a hurry to read and see others trains pictures in your travelogue.
Jean-Pierre
P.S. The last time I saw such a powerful locomotive was in Québec city back in 1968.

Everything about this shot is,from a steam buffs pont of view absoluteley perfect, there is plenty of steam the lights and their reflection help pierce the gloom and the slight grain adds to the grubby steam feel.I am so looking forward to the rest of your posts if they are this good.
tim-of-the-hill (17) 2006-01-08 9:34
Hi Richard.
Really nice photo - you've managed to bring out the detail on the locomotive whilst keeping the rest of the scene properly exposed (I've always had problems with this in the past).
The only minor criticism could be the part of a sign poking out behind the end of the train. Not very easy to do anything about that one!
Overall composition is really good and the carriages in the siding balance the moving train on the right. It feels really alive.

Hi Richard. This is going to be a good series... judging by the the theme and this great first photo. really good image, the steam engine... which I never saw one in Poland... but this is a neat one, it looks like the engine and passenger car are one... they must be very provincial towns. well, great job, looking forward to more.

Magnificent photo, Richard. The scene of the impressive old workhorse going below the bridge is beautifully shown, with a great texture to the emerging cloud of steam. Keeping it in color like you did is indeed a must; those golden light reflections on the cars at the left are quite a special touch.

Beautiful shot Richard - full of the drama, noise and smoke of steam - the reflection on the carriage reaslly lifts the image again - what a grand idea - you must have experienced a nice roasting feeling in that cold weather......isn't it amazing how happily we used to visibly pollute our environment with this smoke when there were thousands of such engines.
great shot

Quite an impressive composition, Richard. I noticed this one a while ago. Since I'm crazy about trains, especially old steam ones, this just hits the right note for me. Indeed, it would work nice to see it b&w, but there's something special in the colors: the greys and the reflected lights. And what a contrast! I really like the setting and the atmosphere - to me it feels so Central-Eastern European, maybe even a setting from mystery or spy novels/movies :D
Very well done.

What a marvelleous experience this must have been to drive steam trains. A very unique gift for yourself, and probably a well deserved one. The steam coming out of the train is very impressive. Pity there is a lot of noise in the image though. Perhaps it was a low light condition. Very good composition. Thanks for dropping by my recent photo today. Hi Richard,
I had to stop by this one. The steam and the power given to your picture by it are just making those two trains really beautiful.
Cheers

Hello Richard,
on se pose des questiosns sur l'avenir de l'atmosphère, ces photos approetent une réponse plutôt négative, mais heureusement que les trains électriques prennent le relais.
Superbe photo qui montre à quel point les rejets de fumées sont énormes.
Regards.
Daniel.

Impressive view from my country...
I LOVE THE POLISH STEAMING !!! :)
Pure beauty for my eyes, pure poison for the environement...
In any case, incredible realisation of this scene.
Best regards. Grazyna.

wow!!!!!
what a beautiful shot!!!
the steam is very well captured while the reflection of train's lights to the next wagon gives a colour stroke of the brush to the grey atmosphere...

Hello Richard
My first thought went to those cattle cars of WWII carrying people towards the "final solution"! Impressive view of a starting engine, indeed.
No birds flying around!
Cheers.

This one is interesting too, very evocative. I like the lights and the glow cast on the adjacent carriage. You made the right choice keeping this in colour.

Lots of atmosphere and vitality.Artistically steam engines are more attractive to the photographer as long as one does't take a deep breath. This is a first class representation with great colors and detailes.Regards Wolf.

Hi Richard
Perfect mix of exiting elements - dim light, smoke and small but eye-catching areas of warm light, this photo truly deserves to be featured on the home page (where I found it). Brilliant work.
Best wishes

Hi Richard
As said by many, the light reflecting off the stationary coach and smoke are the main attraction. A well composed photograph, excellent work.
Cheers, Blue
